The original Key West lighthouse was completed in 1825 and was destroyed by hurricane in 1846. The new tower was completed in 1848 and at the time was 50 ft tall. A lantern replacement in 1873 added three feet and in 1894 the tower was raised twenty feet to prevent being obscured by trees and taller buildings. It’s currently about 100 ft above sea level.
